Just because I have 4S does not mean I need to dble. 2NT seems like an adequate description to me. If S is the place to be we have not given up on that option.

If I double and partner bids 3C (or threatens to Lebensohl me there) then what am I supposed to do? Play in 3C? Commit to 3N?

I vote for 2N.

I'm a tad surprised that you voted on your own poll Jill, albeit an abstain. I go for 2NT, because it shows my values and the location, and despite what some people think, it DOES NOT exclude a 4-card Spade suit. It's also easier to deal with than a Double.

2 NT because it tells partner your approximate values and that you have heart stoppers. Partner can still probe for a 4-4 major fit with a ♥ cue.

I vote for 2N.


If partner has 2 ways to show clubs and uses the stronger one, then yes, bid 3nt. If he uses the weaker one, pass as J9 in the suit and the quick tricks outside is not that bad.

Fixed your post.

You are right though that one could use 3H for stayman and 3D as a transfer to spades.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

a. 3♣ = diamonds; 3♦ = Stayman; 3♥ = spades; 3♠ = clubs, or perhaps even
b. 3♣ = diamonds; 3♦ = clubs; 3♥ = spades; 3♠ = Stayman, or
c. 3♣ = diamonds; 3♦ = spades; 3♥ = clubs; 3♠ = Stayman, or
d. 3♣ = spades; 3♦ = clubs; 3♥ = diamonds; 3♠ = Stayman, or maybe even
e. 3♣ = 4+ spades; 3♦ = clubs; 3♥ = diamonds; 3♠ = whatever - both minors perhaps.

Not sure it really matters too much at the end of the day so long as you have all the main bases covered.

One reason that I'm not a big fan of double is that I'm not sure what I'd bid over a two spades response, given that I have made a balancing double and may be light. When I struggle to cope with favourable responses, the limit bid of 2NT becomes more attractive.
