Play for the drop you have 9 cards "Eight ever, nine never"
We have to assume that west overcalled with 5 spades and the small club lead suggested 3 or possibly 4 small. So 5 cards at most in the reds. So if:
5-3-2-3 If you guess everything you make 13 tricks. Having lost to Qx you are playing catch up.
The interesting question here is what is the best play at trick 2?
How about playing K and then J♥? If it loses we play AK♦when we get in and claim 10 tricks if the Q does not drop and 11 if it does. If the J♥holds play AK♦and claim 12 tricks if the Q drops and 11 if it does not.
Thus you reverse the rule of "Eight ever, nine never" to "9 ever 8 never" (finesse with 9 hearts and play for drop with 8 diamonds).
