This hand is from a Sectional Swiss Teams event that I played in this afternoon.

IMPs converted to VPs (20 VP scale). Six 9 board matches. This is match #4, and you are among the leaders.

Assume that, in an uncontested auction, you arrive in 6 from the North hand (the strong hand with Q9 of clubs) and get a Q lead. Plan the play.

(Sorry, I don't have the bidding. I held the North hand, but arrived at 3NT at my table. This is the play problem presented at the other table)

I finesse both round suits by leading the Queen. Clubs first.

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

Besides playing for fun, most people also like to play bridge to win

Which spade ruff? I am assuming you suggest AKQ and discard a spade, then ruff 3rd spade? If you are going to play like this, then take finesse first, which you need anyway, and if it fails you can not effort to lose a club, which keeps the option to play W for 108 doubleton club?

I don't know that it matters, but I did get the auction from one of my teammates.

3 - Relay to 3NT.
4 - Long clubs, slam try.
4 - intended as RKCB in clubs, interpreted as a cue bid.
Remainder of auction confused.

I confirmed that the lead was the Q.

Agree with Hanoi. Alternative lines must overcome dangerous entry problems.

So, if you win the Q opening lead in hand and lead the Q, it is covered by the King. You win the Ace, West following with the 3. You now lead the Q from dummy which is also covered by the King. You win the Ace, East following with the 7.

Continue please.

It is tempting to run 9 unless covered, in case West was dealt KT84 but this loses when East has
  • T3 doubleton and KTxxx or
  • T83 and the wrong major shortage
So perhaps, if West follows with a low , it is better just to win J, hoping for a 3-2 split.
