Game all

RHO deals and opens 4.

You have

KQJ63
97
A92
AQ7

What's your call a) at MPs b) at IMPs?

If you X, do you intend to bid 4 over P's 4?

I am not doubling of course as the hand is not good enough to x and bid 4S over 4H. I will risk a 4S bid, and it IS a risk.
I do not understand the title of the post.

4 spades.

i am not doubling but that's not because i don't have the strength for it. i don't have the clubs or hearts for it. yes, i am playable in clubs, but not as playable as doubling and correcting would imply. if partner is 2-4 in the black i want to play 4s for sure.

doubling and pulling isn't a function of strength when you have no space - it's just a function of shape.

I would double and pull 4 to 4 if the spades were AKxxx to show the flexi hand. But here I go for the one-basket approach.

Last time I saw someone bid over 4 with a hand like this (better, in fact), the result was -1700.

But still, I don't think I could bring myself to pass. Playing a "dbl + pull = flex" approach, that would be my bid. Otherwise just the cookie-cutter 4.

@Ron: "strong 4s" probably means if 4 where a strong bid, pass would be easy :)

Who plays a strong 4D Nuno? Doesn't make sense to me, but not much that Jinksy says actually ever does. I too am worried about telegraph numbers.

It was facetious. In the UK at least, a lot of older partnerships still play strong 2s, which means a lot fewer awkward decisions. I can just about imagine finding someone who plays all 'preempts' strong over here.
