Matchpoints:

system is 4 card majors. 1 Spades overcall will be at least 5 card 99% of the time.

What best here, support clubs, or wait for the X? Or something different like bid 1N

thanks,

Eagles

Nothing other than 1N would have occurred to me.

2 seems best in 4-card majors. The spades are not good enough for a penalty pass and I don't think you should often have 4-card support for partner when you bid 1NT.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

2.

Looks right to support. If 1 fetches a reopening double, not only is it not certain that you are beating 1S but if you are then you may not play there and you are not well placed if LHO runs to 2D and p passes as you have not shown a club fit.

I think 1NT is just bad. With p promising 4C and very possibly more in a weak NT context, there is no reason not to compete naturally to 2. The A is going to be excellent opposite a singleton and questionable in NT. The only time 1NT might be right is if p actually has the strong NT but how likely is this with 10 between you and RHO.

tl;dnr: If in doubt, support.

In an ACOL context I clearly prefer to support rather than bid 1NT. I also don't care to try a head hunting pass as they may make it or run if PD reopens.

thanks all :) I think i made a mistake by passing, I probably over-rated the spades.

IMO 2 = 10, 1N = 9, Pass = 8.
2 is natural and pre-emptive. Also, some partners are miffed when you don't support them. Although, if you play a system where a 1 opening bid can be made on 3 cards or fewer, then 1N may be safer.

Either 1NT or 2C for me. Pass is off the planet.

Given 4-card majors partners clubs rate to be real. I favor 2 along the lines of pard can compete (and sometimes get us to 3nt) or they can and I'll be able to express my doubts.

Pass is definitely not happening.

Yes, but a lot of the 4 card Majorites I know would open 1C on a 4333 shape. If this is not the case, I agree with your post.

you don't explain system in full

If one club is often balanced and sound then I pass and expect pard will reopen with x for a plus.

If one club can be crap I bid 2c.
