A hand from this weekend, imp scoring (teams):

You're playing Gazzilli, and as a result a jump shows an offensive 2-suiter (5-5 or better), values primarily in the 2 suits, and less than 16HCP (no exceptions here). A typical hand is HHxxx-x-HHxxx-xx, aiming for 10 tricks when partner has the remaining top honors in our suits.

What do you bid? And what's your reasoning?

I would pass.

I don't like my chances in 4 on the likely club lead. I also don't like my chances in 5 given that we are likely to be off 2 or 3 tricks in the offsuits and one more in diamonds.

3NT is not likely to make, either, as we may be off the entire club suit and, if we do have a stopper, it is unlikely that we have 9 running tricks.

From the hand that you suggested as the typical hand for this auction, I assume that you did the same, as 3 could easily be our last making spot on that hand. But from the fact that you asked the question, I suspect that partner's hand is somewhat different, and that either 4 was cold. Something like:

KQxxxx xx AKJxx ----

or

KQTxx xx AKQxx x

I would bid 4. Looks like the most likely game. I assume partner will open 1 with 6-5

IMO 4 = 10, 4 = 9, 5 = 8
Gazzilli is great. Typical minima for partner are
  • K Q x x x x - K Q J x x x x
  • K Q x x x x A K x x x x x
I agree with Artk78 that game may be defeated by a forcing defence -- and then, probably, by several tricks; but that means a 3-level contract is likely to go down too; you won't necessarily be doubled.

I'd try 4. I have little experience with Gazzilli; but this sequence is very much like the corresponding Precision sequence, where I would take a shot at game.
