Partner opens 2

2 (3) P (3N)
P   (P)  X

1. Does the double here ask partner to

a) lead their suit - here spades
b) lead dummy's suit - here clubs
c) has no specific meaning as to lead?

2. Given your answer, do you consider your answer "standard" or "by partnership agreement" ?

3. Do you happen to know where a discussion of this question is addressed in the published bridge literature?

Thanks.

Doesn't sound like an auction where I would want to lead spades without a solid sequence into the 3NT bidding whether partner doubles or not. Partners pass of 3C suggested she wasn't terribly concerned about defending 3C undoubled...thus not a whole slew of HCP.

So, without further looking at my hand, I would lead a spade with a KQ good sequence and an outside entry, but a club otherwise.

This is inferential, on my part. I don't think partner is demanding anything.

Usually this means "lead our suit", but...

2. By partnership agreement.

I think, on this auction, that partner is saying he has bonus high cards and a solid club holding over the bidder. I'd usually expect to lead a spade here, but I would look at my hand first.

3. I don't think it is.

Very much by partnership agreement.

We open particularly fruity weak 2s, meaning we can't raise with some holdings that you might standardly want to, so X says I have help.

I think it suggests a spade lead but you definitely need an agreement. I'm sure there was something about this in Bridge World Standard but I can't find it now.

I polled several friends and they all want this double to ask for red suit lead, probably hearts as it's the one suit opponents likely doesn't have.
I ten to agree with them but I can see arguments for other meanings.
