Does BBO run on multiple remote servers? Strange lag behaviour

Often I find I'm lagging with some of the players on a table, and not others. I can see the profile for some of the players, while for others it just says "searching" forever. Some of the players I can chat with and see their bids, while others are frozen on my screen, while I'm frozen on theirs.
Is this some weird problem on my computer, or does BBO use several servers? If it's the latter, can I control so I only sit with players from "my" server to prevent this lag issue?

Allow me to rephrase my question: I don't care about the underlying architecture for BBO hosting. Has anyone else encountered this problem, where some players are "not there" for them? Is there a solution?
