IMP's

LHO leads and RHO cashes AKQJ; LHO play 35T and 2; I discarded 57 from dummy.
RHO now plays Q.
What is the best line from here?

K, AKQ throwing club, AQ, A. Hope diamonds are 3-3 or someone gets squeezed (or J drops in 3).

K, AQK, A and A. They're discarding on the diamond if not 3-3 and I still have the heart finesse ( ) available.

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

Provided RHO has club guarded, I would try diamonds first, if LHO has the length, there is an auto dbl-squeeze.

If RHO guards diamonds, provided he has spades and the club length, the heart finesse is likely on.

Agree with others: Cash minor winners and (usually) play for the drop in hearts. If RHO guards the round suits, then he is squeezed. If LHO guards diamonds, then he is a show-up squeezed.

Seems like this fails if RHO has something like AKQJ Jx Txxx QJx but overall i like this line.

This is the complete hand.
I played 3 rounds of (RHO discarding 2) and A.

Yes, that was quite bad. FWIW RHO is also likely to have Jxxx of hearts when he doubles, he would not double with AKQJ of spades fourth and nothing in hearts.

isnt it a bit strange for rho to cash here? He could switch to a club at trick two. That probably puts you in difficulties.

EDIT: Of course, you can probably squeeze him without the count, but you might not guess to do that with the heart finesse looking so tempting.

Always trying to improve...and probably that is for me:
- practice more to count in distributions
- concentrate more on what opps play/bid and get more info out of it (eg 1st discard most often from 5c, RHO probably has stop for his DBL, LHO in this case discarding + RHO returning Q indicates that only RHO will stop , ...)
- I think enough but should think better, here noticing that finesse against LHO is a practice finesse (...not sure how to achieve this).

Most opps I play against are not experts, so that explains it all

No this is not strange at all. At least 99% of bridge players would cash the spades.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

As cards lie, even if RHO doesn't cash out spades, you play 3 rounds of diamonds and it's pain in the a** for the poor guy to find a discard.

when you have a guess, don't just ask yourself "Who has the J?", ask yourself "What cards do I know in LHO's hand? In RHO's hand? What are their possible initial and remaining distributions?"

If you have no clue and you can chose between a finesse or a squeeze, then go for the squeeze. You'll always get a compliment: either "well played" or "nice try". B-)

If you consider LHO discards in combination with RHO discards, it is a very simple problem.

LHO has shown up with 3, 4 and 2, leaving a maximum of 4, LHO's discard on the A tells you all you need to know.

A discard by LHO tells you there is no need to finesse as the drop will always pick up whatever LHO has in .

A discard by LHO also tells you that he has 3max and the drop will pick up whatever holding LHO has in .

The finesse is never an option. A very simple problem, until you have to do it at the table.
bridge is never always a game of exact, for those times it's all about percentages, partner and the opponents.
