Is there some reason people dont farm in the Hunger Games books and grow food?

As far as I can tell the air, water and earth is safe.

Its because there was no reference to farming on Battle Royale

Who says the art of bridge promotion is dead? Just got an email flyer from Larry Cohen with this lead-in:

Quote

Dear Fellow Bridge Players, My sincere best wishes go out to the so many of you who suffered (and are still suffering) with the effects of Sandy. Just about all of us have friends or loved ones who are having a tough time. I hope a little bit of bridge can cheer everyone up.

I knew that, was guessing a bonshpiel was the same as the above after half a bottle of whisky. Not sure where it got the name from, I thought curling originated in Scotland so why bonspiel which looks German ?

As I am not seeing it, I am going to go with yes.

As I have no ad-blocked installed on this machine, I have no earthly idea why.

it was a strange thing. this ad-panel was on the right side of all BBO sites, even at the "hand records", it displayed a lot of german advertising etc, I clicked an icon and a page of JOLLY....international advertising" (or smthg like this) has been opened. I found the link with "disable our..." and since that its off. I suppose I got this add-thing while surfing in www... but I dont know how it happened.

Scientists speculate on top-secret Mars Rover discovery

November 28, 2012
.

NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity used its Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) to snap a set of 55 high-resolution images on Oct. 31, 2012. Researchers stitched the pictures together to create this full-color self-portrait. (Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Malin Space Science Systems)

NASA’s Curiosity rover’s Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument has likely relayed some provocative findings, Space.com reports.

John Grotzinger, lead mission investigator for the Curiosity rover, set the rumors in motion during an interview with NPR last week, saying, “We’re getting data from SAM … this data is gonna be one for the history books. It’s looking really good.”

Most scientists contacted by SPACE.com believe that Curiosity’s SAM has detected organic chemical compounds.

Critical tests have been successfully completed on the key technology for SABRE, an engine that will enable aircraft to reach the opposite side of the world in under four hours, or to fly directly into orbit and return in a single stage, taking off and landing on a runway

A group of astronomers led by Remco van den Bosch from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) have discovered a black hole that could shake the foundations of current models of galaxy evolution.

At 17 billion times the mass of the Sun, its mass is much greater than current models predict — in particular in relation to the mass of its host galaxy. This could be the most massive black hole found to date

From MOSCOW JOURNAL A Hunger for Tales of Life in the American Cul-de-Sac By ELLEN BARRY Published: December 10, 2012

Quote

In Russia, children are raised by their grandmothers, or, if their grandmothers are not available, by women of the same generation in a similar state of unremitting vigilance against the hazards — like weather — that arise in everyday life. An average Russian mother would no sooner entrust her children’s upbringing to a local teenager than to a pack of wild dogs.

But of course much in everyday American life sounds bizarre to Russians, as Mr. Zlobin documents meticulously in his 400-page book, “America — What a Life!”

According to now widely circulated Turkish news reports, NBC hasn't been able to get in contact with Richard Engel, its Middle East bureau chief — or a Turkish journalist apparently working with him — since Thursday. The original Turkish report, which NBC News tried to keep from surfacing but broke out all over the web Monday, can be found here. Google Translate only takes one so far, but the first line of the report, from Turkey's NTV, reads more or less like this

Reading that article made it appear that the reason for the news blackout is that such things improve the chances that the journalist will be returned alive.

With all due respect to Richard Engel and hopes for his safe return, I find that incredible hypocritical.

Hmmmm. I can think of a lot of things starting with "certifiable" that you are more likely to find in this thread.
