IMPs. Your partner opens with 1NT (15-17) and this is your hand:

A 10 7

9 8 6 4 3
A 8 6 4 2

Assume that you play minor suit Stayman, so with opps silent the bidding goes

1NT - 2*
3** - ?

** 4 or 5 diamonds, no 4 clubs

You can cue bid or sign off, but unfortunately you don't have the means to inquire which high cards partner has in diamonds.

What would you like the final contract to be?

5D at IMPs. Playing MPs I'd pass now.

Major suit being "cuebid" is, sorry, utterly useless. Much better to have it show shortness (or alternatively "natural" to imply shortness in the other major.)

I am never ever stopping short of game at this point. I'd be more interested in looking for slam if I had a suitable way to do so. If I could bid 3 to show shortness that would allow me to pass 3NT with confidence if partner bids it, and also to find some slams.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

An interesting note handed to me ("here's what we are playing" notes) that you might like.

"2 is MSS. But, Opener only shows a minor if interested in slam."

I kind of like that, myself.

Oh -- add one more for 3 as a shortness bid.

I'll GF with a shortness showing 3. As others, I'm passing 3NT, else bidding 5.
Kind regards,
Harald

I think I wouldn't pass a 3N bid, though it is close. Even opposite a double stopper it could be wrong to play 3N.

5. This will depend on the degree of heart wastage, though.

Hi,

4D, forcing, and hopefully
this is not ace asking.

Opener will make a move, if he
has a suitable hand for 6D, and
I will hear, if he has values in
hearts.

Most likely the bid is useless, but if
I commit to the 5 level, I can also
check if partner has dream cards for 6D.

With kind regards
Marlowe

I also agree that 3M shows shortness. But I like to play 3 a little differently than Ken.

2 shows either a balanced invitation or both minors weak or strong.

Opener only bids 3m if their interested in GAME, otherwise 2N.

It rests there or responder bids 3m if weakish in the minors or 3M to show shortness and strength. Obviously if responder is strong and opener bids anything besides 2N then we're interested in slam.

I'd go for 5D with the information I have been given.

On the other hand, what would I do without much system after the 1NT opener? I'm tempted to just bid 3NT.
