So if RHO looks confident you would.... I'm not sure? And if LHO looks confident you would....concede? Sounds like a good plan.

I give. South has exactly what he had promised - 4 diamonds, 16 hcp including 3 jacks. He doesn't look to me to have anything extra. Where did the 6♦ come from?

Yes, you're quite right - South doesn't have extras. The thing is that NS play MSS not as a search for better game, but as a slam try, which meant that 5♦ was more of an invite than a sign off.
So you could say that both of them were a bit optimistic.
Still, the slam is makeable if you guess the trump right. However, East doubled confidently holding ♦Ax, jumped with the Ace the first time, and when declarer tried a finesse, ♦Q turned out to be in West.

Do you approve of the bidding, and how comfortable do you feel playing that slam?
I would have driven to 5♦ possibly through a shortness bid like 3♥.
I hate this auction. Well in truth I hate only the 6♦ bid. If partner was at all interested in slam he would have bid 4♦ or made a cue-bid at the four-level. 5♦ says I want to play in 5♦ and I am not excited about your wasted heart stopper(s). End of story.
I believe that the USA currently hold only the World Championship For People Who Still Bid Like Your Auntie Gladys - dburn
dunno how to play 4 card majors - JLOGIC
True but I know Standard American and what better reason could I have for playing Precision? - Hideous Hog
Bidding is an estimation of probabilities SJ Simon
