A neat hand from this evenings' club game:

Scoring: MP

On a convoluted auction, East-West land in 6NTX after a 1NT opening by East. As you can clearly see, the contract is doomed...

In case you missed it, South leads a small club. East rattles off eight cards in the black suits, squeezing South. In the end position, East hopes to finesse diamonds and then throw South in with a diamond to pick up the hearts. This line is easy because South doubled 6NT.

However, South counters by throwing the diamond 10 and Jack under the fourth club and fourth spade. When a small diamond heads toward dummy, South makes his third jettison, of the diamond King. If North carefully preserved his 9xx, the jettison-Deschappelle works wonders. Cool hand, eh?

Now, the sick truth. Here's how our auction went:

1NT-P-4NT-X...

...(the double was to see if the opponents have sound agreements after this double)...

XX...

...(uh oh! They do!)...

P-P-5C...

...(when in trouble, best to look like you know what you are doing, and be weird to the end)...

X...

...(of course)...

P-5NT...

...(there we go -- someone panicked)...

P-6NT-X...

...(trusting, for some reason)...

P-P-P.

At our table, South had about 20 masterpoints and, accordingly, missed the triple jettison. However, Declarer made the neat play of running the eight black cards and then, seeing something was fishy, going into the tank. By this point, the triple jettison was implausible, so I (the sick North) had reduced down to two diamonds and three hearts. If these were KJ10 and Kx...

...of course!!! Declarer rose with the diamond Ace to throw ME in!!!

+100 was a top, albeit undeserved.

Strangely, two of the remaining three pairs were in 6NT down one. Best field ever? Or, too much blue?
