win, cross the the heart K, run the club 8. If this loses to the jack, cross to the spade ace and run the CQ.

Seems to me that you are no worse off if you just return a diamond at trick 2. Depending on what happens later, you may gain something that you are not entitled to, especially if LHO cashes 4 diamonds and RHO has everything in the other suits.
