Written bidding is simple and avoids the issues Helene mentions however it has just as many, if not more ethical issues as the bidding box does.
Large writing, small writing, varying orientation of the writing, bold writing, faint writing, large, bold X, small X, hovering pencil over pad.

Besides the defect of unreliable legibility, a serious drawback comes from passing the bidding pad. To exercise care of reading the pad correctly, many players need to wait for the pad to be front and center. This bit of logistics is problematic after skip bid pauses, trips to the library, and such.
