I use a modified losing trick count as a judgment aid in many areas
If you split into
<=8hcp
3 <=9.5 3 <=9
8+hcp
3 <=8.5 3 <= 8
and apply some discipline for suit strength versus vulnerability then you can fine tune any raises or steer responder to 3N
