If possible it would be good if when a player sets "offline" and want to be "invisible" your friends could see you so that they can ask to be in a tournament.
If a player is "offline" but puts their nic in the "partnership desk" people can see the player even if offline.
So I guess it maybe possible?

I think most people use 'invisible' to escape from their friends, so this would not be a popular feature.

As an example:
I find "vugraph audio commentary" excellent background noise for programming, which I do a lot of in my real job. Every 15 minutes or so something interesting happens and I want to look, but mostly it's just on as noise.
Getting repeatedly queried by my friends (even hello, but definitely for games) and ignored (because I'm not looking at the screen) would be unwelcome at best, and insulting (to the querents) more often than not..

If someone is invisible, send them a message. If you get "mail sent" they ARE offline.

Perhaps a compromise would be 3 modes: Visible, Visible to friends only, Invisible.
Although I think this is mostly useful for Yellows who want to login without being hit up for support requests while trying to play.

Or yellows being hit up for games when trying to handle support requests?
More specifically, that might be an answer for the (somewhat universal) pro profile comment "don't ask me for team games". "Visible to friends only" would be more correct there, I assume, for many.
But the way that "friendship" works on BBO makes this odd. Would more correct be "visible to those I follow", or is it better to require the two-way handshake?

Good question, but maybe academic in this context... it's probably the two-way handshaked partner of yesterday that the invisible user is trying to hide from in the first place

If that's a one-time thing, that's what the "really invisible" setting is for.
If that's a all-the-time thing, that's what "make former follow neutral" is for.
