Thread title comes from an amusing comment on a thread last month where we went two off in 6NT after partner blasted Blackwood.

I'll post the full deal here as I took a view as opener and possibly overbid but would like some opinions as to whether I contributed to this bottom as a result by over-encouraging partner with my light reverse.

Scratch (or very inexperienced) partnership, MPs playing 5CM 15-17NT. We weren't playing 2/1 so 2 is around 10+HCP:

This went two down for a bottom. One pair found 6=, one other was in 6NT-1 and the other two were in 3NT making 12 or 13 tricks.

The bottom is because you didn't make it when I think you should rather than in the auction, 6N is at least as good as 6 on a heart lead and scores better

As you say 'crash bang wallop', but ending up in the optimal optimal contract..

  • If you don't have the methods to distinguish between power and distribution then you have to improvise and partner needs to be alert to this.
  • Have a better approach to bidding slams. 3 should kick this off
  • Two down seems a bit reckless like the 6NT bid.

With one partner I improvise as you did, although this can end up in the wrong place
With another 1 UB - 1[S] GI - 2[S] shows precisely this distribution and count so its easier to move forward.
