Ginsberg's Intelligent Bridgeplayer - the first word coming from the original programmer Matthew Ginsberg; the second word being unintentional sarcasm.

Trivia: Matt originally meant the acronym to stand for "Goren In a Box", but Goren's estate objected, so he changed it.

Mathew Ginsberg is a brilliant programmer. One of his papers, My liGIB: Steps Toward an Expert-Level Bridge-Playing Program nk describes how his innovative AI techniques made GIB the world's most successful Bridge program, winning the 1998 World Computer Bridge Championship, and holding it's own against world-class humans :) IMO, recent "fixes" have introduced new bugs :(

Nigel, you are talking about over 20 years ago. GIB has been far surpassed in the interim.

Speaking of computer TLA's
In 2001: A Space Odessey. the computer was called HAL (Heuristic Algorithmic Learning) machine - but it was actually Kubrick's little joke. It was a 'frameshift' mutation from IBM. HI AB LM.

For Doctor Who fans, GIB stands for Great Intelligence Bridgeplayer.
