Left side of screen goes black and no chat functionality

After playing a few hands sometimes the left hand part of the screen goes black and I can no longer see for example the contract or how many tricks have been won by N/S and E/W. The chat functionality usually also disappears.
Can anyone give me any advice how to fix this?
