Playing Acol weak NT.
I presume most would open 1C after a pass from South.
Sitting E would you respond 1D or 1S?
If the bidding went
1C - 1D
1H - 2S (because 1S is 4th suit forcing)
what should W bid?
I think this is a good argument for playing 1S as natural!

I can't imagine responding in a 4-card minor before a 5-card major. It just flies in the face of pretty much everything I can think of.

Hi,
East responds 1S, length goes before suit quality.
You can discuss what you bid with 4D and 4S, there are pros and cons,
and you can also discuss if you go for Walsh, supressing longer diamonds
in favor of a 4 card major, but with longer spades, 1S.
In general: Finding a major suit fit or finding out there is no fit is
one of the most important tasks in early bidding rounds.
In the given seq.
1C - 1D
1H - 1S
you can play 1S natural, altough this is more common in a 5 card major
system, with a prepared 1C opening bid.
With kind regards
Marlowe

Shame you're playing Acol, don't get many pure 2♦ openers as West in Wei Precision. (4414 - short ♦ or similar 11-15HCPs). East easily bids a 4♠ contract after that.
And as everyone else has said, East responds 1♠ not 1♦ using Acol, SAYC, 2/1, etc.
