"2/1 context" isn't really enough information, what's 1-3?

What do you call an 8-card suit?

3C now should normally show a weak hand with a long suit - though I'm not sure if things are different in 2/1 due to 1NT being wide-ranging.

Agree with 1NT.

At matchpoints Pass is a reasonable shot.

At IMPS I bid 4C

I would have game forced and probably slam the brakes and end in 5C-1. Or 2. Or 3.

4c should be this now. obv it would be stupid to play it as a splinter

If a direct 3 isn't invitational, then 1NT...3 usually is. I can live with calling this hand invitational if that will let me show my 8-card suit, so I bid 3. The tough decision will be next round, if partner accepts with 3NT I'll have to decide whether to pull to a suit contract.

It would be stupid to play it as a splinter but it would be less stupid to play it as a source of tricks + spade fit + not good enough to 2/1.

Over 1S, I'd upgrade this hand to an INV single suiter with clubs (whatever methods you use to show that). Although it's a stretch on values, with spade tolerance and an 8c suit at favourable vul it puts the opponents under the most pressure.

whilst we can have a slam with a non-gf opposite a simple rebid, it's massively odds against and for the 1 time you get to slam there'll be more times when you turn them off a club lead and thereby go off in a game you would have made.
