Striped tail ape double another entymology

Today my p did a striped tail ape double, but our opponents succesfully riposted with a redouble and scored +1880 for 4spxx+2.
Can anyobe tell me the origin of the striped tail ape double's name?

A striped-tale ape supposedly flees at the first sign of trouble.

A stripe-tailed ape double is a double of a game contract when you think the opponents can actually make slam (as happpened on the quoted hand), because a doubled game plus two doubled overtricks scores less than a slam.

However, if the opponents redouble, then the doubler runs "like a stripe-tailed ape" to the safety of his suit. This didn't happen here, so I presume the doubler wasn't making a Strip-tailed ape double after all!

I beleive that John Lowenthal coined the phrase and popularized the concept.

For what its worth, I beleive that you partner may be confused about what a "Stripe Tailed Ape" doube refers to. It seems tautological that a Stripe Tailed APe double can not lead to a situation in which the opponents declare a redoubled contract...

Assuming your partner had the ♠A876, I think they were making an excuse for a poor double. :D

Richard is correct. After a xx the doubler runs, hence the term "Striped Tail Ape". You partner should have bid 6H.
