Gave this one to the opps in 2+1, with 3 making and even 4 on sub-optimal defence. When is the appropriate time for N (me) to bid hearts here? (playing Acol with pickup partner, so no agreements on jump shifts).

After 2S, North can bid 3H in the pass out seat.

A 2H bid after 2D is also a possible option, making a neg. X followed by bidding a suit
is the way to show a non forcing 1-suiter, if a 2/1 response after intervention is forcing.

Given that you are in a new partnership, the delayed option is easier to recognice as weak,
competing for the part score.

If they bid 3S over 3H, give up.

Dbl then bid 2. With a stronger hand you'd bid 2 immediately.

Why not a direct 3 bid? Would that bid show something else?

There are 2 ways for north to show long hearts over 1:

-bid 2
-double and then bid 2

One of them is forcing, and the other is not, normal agreements say that direct 2 is the strong&forcing sequence, so you should have used the second one.

I wouldn't care much about this one, there is a zero chance opponents will let you play 3 red, they have 10 spades!

Don't know about other people, but for me it's the same hand with the minors reversed.

May be an option, but the OP said, it was a new partnership, no prior agreements / discussions
about the meaning of jumps.
For me, 3H would be a fit jump, but we also play non forcing free bids.

I think without agreement, 3 would generally be considering preemptive. And white vs. red it can make finding the right contract harder for opponents.

As played, correction to 2H after 2D is unlikely to cost, and may score better than diamonds.
