hangouts for android help how to see who is online

I miss the old google talk app for android. I could see which of my contacts were online, they were indicated with a green dot.

How can I see it in hangouts? I can start a hangout with someone and send them a message. I suppose once I do that I will somehow be told if they didn't receive it instantaneously because they were offline. but it is a little silly to say "good morning" just to be told that the addressee will receive my greetings in the evening.

Helene reading the headline I thought this thread was about all the new social media forums just for androids.

There are media sharing forums just for bots to share now online.

call them facebook for robots.
