Partner opens 1:

1? 2 (13+ solid or semi-solid spades)? 4?

If you bid 1, what do you bid over 2? Over 3?

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

If I have a strong jump available, I will use it. Might as well tell partner that are trumps.

Don't understand the problem. When you have a strong jump shift available, there are no alternatives left for this hand. Why else would you play SJS?

2, cue diamonds next and do whatever pard tells you to do thereafter.

I start with 2S. If partner bids 3D, I bid 3S, and thereafter leave further moves to partner, cueing 4D if partner makes slam tries

I bid 2 if it is available, but it wouldn't be for me.

How the auction then proceeds depends on your agreements. When I do play SJS, my 2 says that only hearts and spades are possible trump suits: if I have hearts as well, I'll bid them next round. Partner's job is to basically either stay out of the way, until I further describe my hand, or to cuebid....in support of spades. Thus 1 2 3 is not a suit: it is a control in support of spades.

Anyway, if I SJS, then my next call is 4, to shut the hand down. Partner will move only with a control-rich hand, which is what I need.

If I didn't have SJS, and I wouldn't, then I bid 1.

Over 2, I bid 3 to establish the gf, since I am too strong, imo, to simply bid 4. I propose to do so next turn unless something happy occurs along the way.

Over 3, a strong js by partner, I bid a quiet 3: no other call makes any sense to me. I need to create a one round force before deciding what to do next. I suspect that my next call may well be 5, but there's no need to commit just yet....let's see what we learn first.

2 to show the strength of the hand. Your hand doesn't have 13+ HCP, but the hand is worth 9 tricks all by itself in a contract.

How you continue depends a lot on your agreements over the 2 bid. You don't plan on stopping below 4 , but the key is to get partner to identify his values so you can evaluate slam prospects.
