What is this 23 count worth? I thought it was so good I bid it as 25-27 balanced and we ended up in a poor (albeit making) slam. My p and I are frequent upgraders but he (reasonably) thought I was mad. I ran to the K&R for some sympathy and it very kindly informed me that the hand was worth KnR = 26.25, DK = 25. Bad luck, poor judgement or problems elsewhere?

Thoughts?

You evaluated the strength of your hand as well as you could for no trumps. Your partner should have passed 4NT. He had no more than he said when he bid 4, and your reversion to 4NT strongly suggests a 3325 shape or a dead minimum if you have three diamonds.

I would have rebid 3 on your hand, though, since its actual worth is strongly dependent on the level of fit. I can't help but imagining partner holding Jxxx xx Axx xxxx when you will languish in 3NT when a strong favourite for seven.

I think treating it as 25-27 is an overbid, perhaps a gross one. I'd want solid clubs, or at least the J for serious upgrades. Ax and Kx tight are both marginal holdings.

I agree with Phil. I'd open 2C and rebid 3C.

not sure what you mean by semi-positive is there a limit (like say
a king up to maybe 7 hcp)??? If so it can make a huge difference
on what your subsequent bids mean. I agree your hand is worth
close to 25 and is very slammish with all those controls. Your p
is resulting your bidding due to the misfit in clubs for shame.
For some reason the explanations of your bids is hidden on my
computer so I am speculating here.

Your decision to quant has to be based on the definition of semi
positive and w/o further info I cannot specualte if p overbid or the
quant was an overbid. You should not evaluate your hand state it
and then increase its value based on no positive information. In
general this means ionce you upgrade your hand to say 25 you
should not make a quant unless something in the bidding makes
your hand better. nuff said

My experience with 6332 20+ hands is that the 6 card suit with 3+ honnors is worth 2 extra milton work points when treating the hand as balanced.
