A possibility based on one of Ken's after the auction (1) - P - (2) [or (1!) - P - (2)]:-

X = minors or 3-suited (2NT advance shows hearts)
2NT = clubs, or diamonds, or hearts and competitive (paradox advances)
3m = hearts and the minor
3 = hearts and invitational

Zel, I’m trying to make sense of this post of yours.

This is how I understand it –
1 (promising , or a 1 direct opening)-P-2-?
1. X = both minors, or a 3-suited takeout
...a. Partner with , shows this by bidding 2NT
...b. Without , partner bids his better minor
2. 2NT = any competitive single-suited // hand
...a. Partner will now need to bid 3 as pass/correct
3. 3m = plus the minor bid (easy enough)
4. 3 = and an invitational hand (easy enough) [Do I assume at least a 6-card suit here?]

Is my understanding here correct?

Yes, except that a hand that would raise clubs can respond 3 over 2NT and a hand that would raise both minors can respond 3. Over the double, Advancer just bids as if it was a normal takeout double but chooses 2NT if they would have bid hearts to give Doubler the chance to show both minors. The 3 overcall is the same as a normal 3 overcall but having 2 different routes allows you to differentiate between stronger and weaker hands and thus catch more of the games they may be preempting you out of.

Here is another defensive possibility for the player sitting in 4th seat. This hand was spat out by BBOs deal generator just moments ago.

So the bidding goes –
1 (promising 4+ )
Pass
2 (the North hand again qualifying for the 3-5 HCP response containing 4-card trump support)
3 (Running minor suit with a guaranteed outside entry, asking for a stopper to play in 3NT. Without a stopper, West will bid 4 as pass/correct)

Reverse the West and East holdings in the above hand and East can bid 3NT directly over North's 2 bid.

Let's see how many things you got wrong this time around...

1. I'd probably open 1N rather than 1

2. Raising to 2 with 3-5 HCP and 4 card support is an aberration. I can't recall doing so more than a handful of times and certainly wouldn't do so with the hand in question.

3. Doubling 3 is nonsensical. RHO has advertized a long running. If LHO has a spade stopper, it has to be the Ace. Why precisely am I doubling Spades? If anything, I want partner leading his heart suit.

I don't know why you bother Richard. Do you know the saying "Never wrestle with a pig. The pig enjoys it and you only get dirty"?

West has enough to hold up the Queen long enough to stop the opponents from running the suit.

Damn, you are genuinely stupid.

How precisely does South know this when he is doubling?
