i was blocked from playing a tournament today because my completion percentage was too low, which was rather surprising. in the profile thing if i log on using the web version it says my %age is 'unknown'. how so?

Needs to have 10+ completed tourneys in the last 30 days (IIRC) to have a completed tournament percentage.

This frustrates me as well, it's pretty hard to actually achieve this.

VERY, VERY useful feature that COMPLETION RATE.
Please don't do anything to weaken it's effect.
On the contrary !

I was unable to register for a tourney today with a friend who seldom plays tourneys.

Of course it is a good idea to block players who abandon say half of their tourneys. However, it is not a good idea to block players who have an unknown completion rate because they play tourneys very seldom. In this case, the system should let them play. If all hosts of free tourneys imposed this restriction, all players who did not play for 2 months and all new players would never have a chance to play a free tourney. And there are people who cannot afford payed tourneys.

There are free tourneys hosted by BBO without any restriction - anyone can play these to get a completion rate. Look for the Express tourneys, they are free, fast, short and run every 5 minutes or so. Completing 10 of these cannot be very hard.

Besides, most hosts don't use the completion rate filter. There are lots of other free tournaments a new member or one without a completion rate can join.

Completing 10 of these would certainly be very hard on your nerves; these tournaments only barely resemble bridge, as way too many of the players are either unaware of the conditions of contest (there is actually a loaded convention card that all players "agree" to play but many don't) or simply mastermind at every opportunity they get.

There are other tourneys of course. This was just a suggestion in response to the gloomy scenario that ALL hosts on BBO will use the completion rate filter and nobody new or who plays rarely will be able to get one.
