4♥. Bad luck if p has two aces but even then, 6♥ could go down on a diamond ruff.

4♥ is tactically sound to avoid spade competition (and clubs as well), it also preempts partner from bidding 4♠ wich is also very good. 1♥ is IMO the scientific approach and only alternative (to be followed by 4NT if we gather a form of support)

Last time I had a hand like that (earlier this week) RHO opened in my major.

I indeed chose 4♥. It continues (p)-p-(X) to you, you pass and LHO bids 4♠, passed to you. Now what?

I'm not passing, I have zero defence so won't double either. This leaves 5♥ pr 5♦.
They will hardly make any difference,5♦ might play better than 5♥ and partner might find a save aginst 5♠ thx to 5♦, but very rare. Also RHO migh find a killing defence to 5♥ thx to our 5♦ bid, and 5♦ leaves a bit more space to opps. I would go with 5♥

Would you take 5♦ as natural there? It didn't even cross my mind my partner might

I'll X here. I don't see 5♦ being realistic with them having been bid on my right, and I don't know if partner has any support for ♥s. A bullet and RHO's ♦ is some defence. I guess I'm now regretting not having started slower. Still, partner can always pull...
