best line for slam after opening lead..

Playing Acol with south dealer, you end up in 6H from south, after a diamond splinter from north and no bidding from EW.

West leads the 9♠. Their convention card says low from three or more to an honour, second top from three or more small, top of doubletons.

How do you play it from here?

If ♥ sit 4/1 you have no chance that I can see. Play the KQ of trumps and lead ♦ for a return. Play the ♠ and hope for a doubleton. Play the ♦ to cut again. ♣A followed by another ♣. Get the lead and pull trump to cash remaining 2 spades.

I hope?

Play the diamond to partner and return for a cut, return heart to partner and play another diamond to cut again. Pull another trump and play clubs 2 rounds?

I will go with that instead.

If you're worried about ♠ ruffs, you can play RHO for doubleton or trebleton ♥J.
♠Q, ♦A, ruff a ♦ with ♥Q, finesse ♥9, ruff a ♦ with ♥K, finesse ♥T, ♥A, Claim

Partner may be unsympahetic when LHO has ♥J and ♠ are 3-3

If LHO really has a singleton spade, we have to play as Nigel suggests, but that's not particularly good odds. A 1=5 spade break would mean that ♥J is 12:8 to be offside, and we're going down on all sorts of normal layouts, as well as giving up all chance of coping with a 4-1 trump break.

Unless the lead came out very quickly, I'd duck a club at trick two, then play to set the clubs up.

... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
