This American Life had a nice podcast about liberals and conservatives this morning: Red State Blue State

I can't get the transcript, but aside from the massive ideological gap in this country it noted four similarities about the reds and blues, including:

- "We are more open minded than Them"
- "They are Nazis"

When I saw that it took the entire hour I figured I would listen to a bit. I listened to the entire program. I may comment more after dinner, but with regard to the person who never imagined that Sieg Heil had any offensive connotation I suggest he listen to

Constance and I listened to it last night when out for a long drive to a restaurant. The "sieg heil" segment kind of made one wonder what rock that guy has been under all his life. And then there was the guy who would no longer let his friend eat his barbeque...

I note that James Carville and Mary Matalin are still happily married. (And Constance is still with me and my firearms.)

I like to think they had to do some heavy searching to find the examples that they presented. I guess if i were in a hiking group ant they told someone s/he wouldn't be welcome because s/he is a Republican I would say that I had better leave also. Not that I am a Republican, but no doubt I have some ideas that would not match theirs.

My recollection is that they found an online forum where folks were discussing problems of this type and took it from there.

Correct. The show consisted of vignettes of friendships ripped apart by ideology.

I don't think this underplays the ideological gap in this country, however, since the program discussed actual relationships, not random people that loathe the other side.
