Surely you had another reason, or were considering another call besides 3♦?

Yeah, at the table I doubled. As soon as I did, I was sure it was wrong. Partner had 4=5=2=2. He bid 3H. I then (in the grave I had dug myself) decided to continue digging and bid 3NT. Partner then left it in. All in all, I was hoping to not share how badly I bid this hand, but wanted to make sure I knew what to do next time so that my hand didn't stray towards the red card.

(2) You could easily play in 3d going off when 4S was cold opposite some 4423.
(3) The chance of playing in a 4-2 fit is very small, given that if partner has 44 in the majors he will definitely bid 4C. In fact some people would do this with 4-5 aswell since the 4-4 fit rates to play better than a 5-3 fit anyway, and if dbler has 4-4 he should bid the lower one when doubler is say 4-3-4-2.
(4) Its not as if your diamond suit is do good that 3d is guaranteed to be a decent place to play.
Lots to think about. Bonus questions for the panel:
Are you closer to dble if partner was unpassed? This obviously depends a lot on agreements but here a large fraction of hands with six hearts are ruled out by the failure to make a weak two. Many of these hands might pass over 3d when 4H is virtually cold.
What would you do over 4c?

4=5=2=2. How many points? Maybe he should have bid 4♣. Maybe he should have pulled 3NT to 4♠. You should have a 4-card major for your double.

Pass is not unreasonable for me. I like it much more than DBL. I'd still bid 3♦ though.

Seems like the real problem was that you tried to rescue yourself by bidding 3N. You look likely to make at least 7 tricks in 3h, when opponents are virtually a lock for 3c=, so only lost a couple of imps if you pass 3h.

IMO...
3♦ = 10, 3N = 9, _X = 7
