I would like to be defending 7NXX

On a somewhat more serious note, 7D looks pretty good

Is this a trick question? 7 makes on diamonds 4-2 or better and hearts 3-1 or better, and no other grand is good, plus some other combinations of red suit distributions. No other grand is good.

7> 7N > 7 at any form of scoring.

Deciding the best contract isn't an A/E issue, but getting there could be:

1. If South opens 2 it seems that the auction would start:

2 - 2
2* - 2*
3 - 4?
4 - 4N
5? - ?

*Kokish

7 is still the best spot even if partner has the singleton A. I could even see 4N over 3

2. If North opens:

1 - 1
1 - 2
2N - 3
3N -

Now what?

Well, he asked which contract you'd like to be in without specifying scoring. I imagine that 6N is probably the nuts at matchpoints...it always beats 6H, and loses to 7H when hearts are 2-2. Compare that to 7D which also loses to 7H when hearts are 2-2, but only beats 6H when you get not 5-1 diamonds.

The only way 7D might become better than 6N is if enough of the field is in 6N or 7D. I doubt that there are many fields where anyone will be in either of those contracts.

Amusingly, I had an auction yesterday that might have had a similar theme to this hand.

1D* 1S
2C 2H*
3C 3S
4H 4N
5C 5D
5S 6S

1D=2+ limited to 15
2H=art gf
4H=good hand for spades
5C=1/4
5D=Q ask
5S=No

At this point I was thinking I wish I had KQJxx of a minor, so that I could convert to 7 of that minor (as I know partner has the ace, and that we are just off the SQ). for example Kx x KQJTx KQxxx I could bid 7D for sure. I am not sure why I had this thought since my hand was xx A KJ9xx Kxxxx lol.

So I imagine one method of getting to 7D would have south keycarding, queen asking, and then signing off and partner bidding 7D. This would require south to know his partner had a stiff heart though probably.

6nt was my thought, but I see how 7 is likely much better at imps and possibly better at mp.

I'd like to be in 7D too, can anyone see a conceivable auction where you get there?

I can with one partner (cheating by using relays):

1 - 1 (forcing 16+; 8+ HCP, 2+ controls, 4+ spades)
1 - 2 (relay; 4+ diamonds)
2 - 2 (relay; 5+ diamonds, 4 spades)
2 - 2nt (relay; short suit is hearts)
3 - 3 (relay; 4153)
3 - 3nt (relay; 3 controls - at this point 6nt is safe, so explore for 7 something)
4 - 4 (super viking relay; both or neither of KQ)
4nt - 5 (relay; one of KQ, both or neither of KQ)
5 - 5 (relay; both or neither of KQ)
5nt - 6 (relay; J not the J)
7

I know the hand opposite is:
Kaaa b KQJaa KQb

where the a's are T and lower and the B's are J and lower.

I got as far as:
2-3 (strong / positive, forcing to 4NT)
3-3
4-5 (natural F1 / cue)
5-5NT (cue / RKCB)

but then it would probably go:
6-7NT (2 or 5 with the queen)
I think opener should show the queen of trumps because he's probably opposite a doubleton. Unfortunately, however, responder will now think that there are 12 tricks in high cards, so he'll bid 7NT rather than offering a choice of suit contracts.

If opener decided not to show the queen of trumps, it would instead go:
6-7 (2 or 5 without the queen)
pass

... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Very nice Mobodell. My auction is similar except that I show controls in a more traditional way, using Q/J asks once all of the AK controls turn up.

1C = 15+ nat/bal or 18+ any
... - 1H = 4+ spades, GF
1S = relay, usually 18+
... - 2C = 4+ diamonds
2D = relay
... - 2H = 4 spades, 5+ diamonds
2S = relay
... - 2N = 5 diamonds
3C = relay
... - 3D = 4153
3H = relay
... - 4C = extras, 3 controls
4N = Q ask
... - 5H = CQ, DQ, no HQ
5N = J ask
... - 6C = no JC
6D = DJ? (forcing)
... - 6H = DJ, no HJ
7D

Responder's hand is Kaaa, b, KQJbb, KQb where a = Q or lower and b = 10 or lower. Even so, I would not at all mind being in 6NT here and would expect it to give a good score.

IMO...
7 will usually be OK but needing a good score, at pairs, in an expert field, you might try 7N
With these E-W hands only a heart lead defeats it. :)
