1NT. I was going to bid 2, but then I started trying to construct balanced 14-counts opposite which we'd miss game, and I couldn't think of many.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

This is close to an idea (not my invention) that I raised on a thread a few weeks back...passing, intending to cue bid if partner reopens. But I don't like the shape nor the plethora of jacks, so I'll content myself with what only seems like an underbid...1N.

IMO 2 = 10, 2 (if still inverted) = 8, 2 (UCB) = 7, _X = 4, 1N = 3,
1N is superficially attractive but it's an underbid. Worse, if partner has Ax or Kxx and we belong in no-trump, that contract is probably better played by partner.

If you bid 1NT it will go like this:

1-(1)-1NT-(ps)
ps-(2)- X - (2)
ps-(ps)- ??

Come on, pard is unlimited. There's no reason to be pessimistic and mastermind a 1NT bid. A bid which is likely to be passed out if pard has a balanced 13-14 (very possible).

Just bid your hand: 2. If pard has the 12-14 NT he'll bid 2/3NT, and if he's unbalanced with 5+ diamonds our support is more than adequate.

Look at the mess you caused by bidding 1NT :)

This looks like a proper evaluation more than an underbid or mastermind, mike, andy and justin can hardly be all wrong on the same deal, and I find it very conforting that they opted for the same bid as me :)

I can understand 1nt that was my close secondchoice. I just picked 2d(less than invite) to tell pard my bestsuit.
2h for me would show a much better hand, not this junk. I mean pard can often open 1d on less than 12 and I dont assume she will have 14 or more.

what happens over 2d pls?

Now, 3 = 10, 2N = 9, _X = 8, _P = 7.

I'd double 2, without much conviction. Partner knows I have only three, so he won't leave it in with a singleton. I hope he leads a trump.

I will settle for an unimaginative 2C on the first round. Don't like 1NT with 3 lies (extra hcp, both majors unstopped), and think a cuebid on a 9-loser hand and no guaranteed fit is a shocking overbid.

Unsupported jacks are very bad, AKQ tight is very bad, holding in opponents suit is bad as well. Just an awful hand. If I was a good player of course I would never downgrade but this looks like at least a two point downgrade to me. Kaplan/Rubens rates it a 9.2.
