I guess I should point out that the scores on all the hands are not final... until the discussion is over. I will address comments on the scores in the other threads in the next day or two, family obligations is limiting my time getting these formatted and put into the forums.

Note: scores on earlier hands have now been changed. After six boards, the Goodwins are leading 33 to 27.

Board 7
Dlr South
Vul Both

E-W do not bid, Bidding Han (north), jlall (south)

Bidding MrGoodwin (north), TimG (south)

Scores:
2S/3C = 10
3S = 8
2H = 7
4S = 5
3H = 4
5C = 3
3NT = 1

Running score:
32 Jlall-han (gain 5 for 4S)
34 Goodwins (gain 1 for 3N)

======================

Board 8
Dlr West
Vul None

West opens 1 , if North doubles or passes, East bids 1, West makes a support double (below 2s) or raises to 2 depending upon south's action. East will correct to 2 if necessary. They do not bid beyond 2. If South cuebids 2, West will double and EW pass after that.

North was han, south was Jlall

2N = 10
3C = 8
3N = 7
2HE = 2

Running score:
40 Jlall-han (gain 8 for 3C)
36 Goodwins (gain 2 for defending 2H)

On 7 my partner's 2S showed any hand with a spade invite (2H then 2N artificial). Maybe I should pass at MP but I had prime cards and a ruffing value so thought I was worth a 3S bid. Partner was not short in clubs, and was not even short in hearts so my ruffing value was useless and my DQ was of dubious value. I don't feel too bad about my bid though.

On 8, after X-2S I could have bid 2N for the nuts. Maybe I should have given the D9. If partner is 4324 he will convert to 3C, and with 4333 2N might well play better. Still I had no heart card and partner could not convert 2N to 3C even with weak hearts so thats kind of meh.

This kind of sums up about how I feel about my performance this set and even a lot of hans hands, a lot of closeish judgement calls that could go either way that we got wrong a lot.

I feel like X of 2H is automatic w/w at MP, my hand is just too strong to sell out to 2H. It is really playing for us to be down in 3C and them to be down in 2H which seems like a small target. Additionally we could easily "have them" if partner has 4 hearts and passes, often RHO has no choice but to bid 2H on a 4 card suit and the support X is usually played as mandatory so they could be quite light in points (like 11 opp 6 or whatever)>

Upon reflection, I agree that doubling 2 is clear.

Would you share your opinions of 2 vs 3 on the first round and how close the takeout double is? Would you double a 1 opening with the actual hand? How about doubling 1 with KJ73 J74 KQ7 KQ7? I suspect the answer is "yes" in both cases, but I wonder if either is close.

Tim asked about 2C vs. 3C on the first round because I had told him that I thought 3C was indicated. I still think so, even though now I see that Phantom agreed with Tim. It is one thing to say that 2C is a "free bid" and therefore implies some values, and another thing to say that those values can be as much as a true limit raise of clubs, with a decent five-card suit besides. Anyway, that is how this old-fashioned player sees it.

On the other question, I'm not at all sure that it would be right to double 1D for takeout if the diamonds were KQx and one of the other suits were Jxx. The double on 4-3-3-3 is already "impure," and putting much of the honor strength in diamonds makes it even more so. (And don't even think about overcalling 1NT with the hypothetical hand.)

Hand 1 was quite interesting and I would have liked to see how other people fared after a 15-17 1NT opening. It's a shame that you guys were playing a completely different system that I am not familiar with. I can't say anything about your auctions.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
