Scoring: IMP

3 (PASS) ?

Partner is reasonably aggressive occasionally but not normally super weak. A six-card suit is definitely possible.

Where are you going?

3NT wtp?

Even if partner is:

xx
x
xxxx
J10xxxx

It has reasonable play.

Even if partner is in the top end, 6 is a far shot, i.e:

xx
Kx
Kxx
QJ10xxx

6 is on a finesse.

(If you change a red card to a club, partner is not an agressive preemptor.)

Did partner hold:

QJx
x
xx
Qxxxxxx

?

Finally; of course 5 might occasionally be right, but I'll never find out below 3NT.

My simulation suggests that 3NT is 40% clear and 60% WTP. Anything else is 90% LOL.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

1 or pass. I think that opening 3 in first seat with that is dreadful.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Agree since it seems to run counter to best strategy. IMO that is preempt when your ODR is very O and your defensive values are very low. In the sample hand the Opps are probably at best in a 50% slam if partner has zilch. With partner having marginal values game should probably be defended rather than saved against

EDIT: this is 1st and 2nd seat strategy again IMO

Posting a farfetched example where 3NT is not the best contract does not make it any less WTP.

Not 3 if I'm reasonably aggressive and a 6 card suit is definitely possible. Nor would it make this any less of a wtp if that were a maximum 3 opener for this pair.

3N. No 2nd choice. If partner has the right hand for some slam, too bad, that's the breaks when you preempt loosely 1st & 2nd seat - sometimes you preempt partner.

May I have a Ogust-like next step? Thus 3D asks 3H=trash, 3S=useful suit, 4C=useful hand, zoom for super suit and useful control(s).
