Was shocked to see UK bridge player Richard Bowdery had died, a really nice guy and the same age as me (58).

It was very sad news but reported more on Facebook than these forums or BridgeWinners. Simon Cope wrote a fitting tribute on https://www.bridgewebs.com/bbcba/.

As I said on Facebook, I only knew Richard through bridge but we played a lot in the English Premier League. We were always opponents, since our respective teammates did not want to be at the same time as any of us, but we liked the arrangement and always had a great time. Richard would greet me as a long-lost friend, despite not really knowing me, although we'd been on the same circuit for a considerable time.

It is still very sad.

I met Richard when he played with Steve Root in the newcomers, we were winning one of the other lower categories in the ranked masters IIRC and we chatted a bit. I played with him once or twice when I had a job down in Uxbridge in the mid to late 90s, and he gave me the occasional lift to tournaments. We met occasionally pre pandemic at things like the national pairs regional finals and chatted. Just a shock to see the news.

Eric Kokish, legendary coach and one of the best players produced in Canada.

I didn't know him but we had a few chats at the Nationals over the years, as you do at these affairs.

Many tributes to him on BridgeWinners, including https://bridgewinner...te-eric-kokish/

Cormac McCarthy

“Keep a little fire burning; however small, however hidden.” - it can be hard though - also embarrassing to possibly misquote people but I didn't attribute that to anyone - why do people spread misquotes - I will go and check the book - and it feels disrespectful because I trusted someone. ChatGPT says that is the quote so I apologise for spreading misinformation either way and disrespecting Mr McCarthy. I can't find my copy of the book at the moment. As I said these days whatever the true quote the sentiment is hard these days is it not. Bard gives me ""Fire. Keep a fire burning. Never let it go out." and "The fire is what keeps us going. It's the one thing that reminds us that we're not alone." Bard says Mr McCarthy never made that other quote - it is from Coleridge. Apologies for any disrespect caused by me trusting someone. I feel sadly we are along way down Mr McCarthy's road. I have checked back with ChatGPT and it has apologised for misquoting. It is being so widely quoted I am now on a determined hunt for my or another copy of Mr McCarthy's book -assuming I can find one that has not been modified. I hate to keep labouring a point and editing. But on further investigation with Bard's help it appears to be from a poem called Fire Worship by Longfellow. The investigation continues. How far down the Road are we now. Anyone have a copy of The Road handy and can confirm if Mr McCarthy quoted it at the start of his book

I didn't want to be so self-indulgent as to even comment but the writer of quite a few of my favorite books of all time deserves something special (even from little me)

Saddened when I heard this news on the BBC website.

This video of her SNL performance (https://www.youtube....h?v=X0VpfiMcPPA) is equally relevant, IMO. Her stage presence was electric, and her final act during that performance was pure defiance!

They can stop imploring Diane Feinstein to resign, the Grim Reaper took care of it.

Now Newsom is in charge. Poor dear Adam Schiff will probably watch silently as Gavin appoints Barbara Lee (or perhaps Karen Bass) to the vacant Senate seat.

I will note all the good she did forever, and may the memory be a blessing.

However, as a CA citizen (rather than a CA resident :-), the thing she was most known for affecting non-usanians led me to refer to her as D. Feinstein (D-MPAA). I think her zealous work "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts" should also be remembered.
