yuck... 3 is the bid, but I'm too afraid of missing a game, so I overcall 3NT.

I'm voting for a heavy 3. I just can't stand 5 vul which could easily drift off a few and could be doubled. Partner can see the colours so hopefully he'll not be shy to do something on a scattering of values, especially of LHO passes quickly. It helps if your overcalls are sound when vul.
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is.

3 is OK. I don't like 3NT - I'm not at all comfortable if partner bids 4 over it, eventhough I don't show a balance hand.
4 would be leaping Michaels, but I don't like it if on this hand if natural.
Kind regards,
Harald

Except that I rate my chances far better in 3NT than 5? - no problem at all.

3 diamonds, I play solid overcalls vs preempt for this kind of hands.

I see 4D included as an option, if my system allowed it I would love that (though I always play leaping michaels). If 4D is not available I would bid 3S stopper ask.

so what of all the "oh no we went past our likeliest game" protests? is 5 more likely than 3NT?
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Even if 3N is our most likely game (which is not clear to me at all, especially if you overcall 3N and maximize the chance of a heart lead), 3D to me is a huge underbid and you will play 3D a lot of the time you can make 3N. This hand is just too good for me to overcall 3D. Not to mention that we might miss 6D. If I have to get to our second best game to avoid playing in 3D or missing diamond slams, I'm willing to do that, and I think that 5D and 3N will be about as good on average.

Heh I was the first one who voted 4D. It seems perfect if natural.

If 3 is passed out, the chances that we missed game are not that great I think.

I dunno what chances are in 5 as compared to 3NT, but I sure think chances in 5 are better than those in 4 :) ;) :)

hum... I don't know. Pard is likely to pass with a 7-8 count, which rates to be what he has, e.g. something like

4 looks obvious if you aren't playing LM.

Probably, but nothing is perfect - you might have bypassed your only making game.

The big upside for 4 is slam bidding.
