Scoring: IMP

1 - 2
2 - ?

You are playing a natural system where 2/1s are not GF. Your first bid is fairly automatic. What do you bid now?

I must be missing something. You have an invitational hand, no fit, and a stopper in the 4'th suit. Isn't 2N automatic?

2NT, 10-12 hcp, club stopper, not 4 hearts, not 3 spades. Isn't that what I have?

2nt seems auto, while the only potential alternative is pass. And that only if your table feel noted that one of your opponents couldn't control his/her drool.

2NT is normal as long as you play sound opening bids.

I thought 2NT is automatic as well. However, I chose the eccentric bid of 3 and we ended playing in the 4-3 (at game as it turned out). This happened to be a much better contract than the 3NT at the other table. I thought it was a fluke, but wondered if anyone else would raise hearts rather than bid NT.

Partner's hand was:

Axxxxx
KQxx
T
Ax

Not with this hand of quacks.

Must be a trick question - 2NT.

On the expected trump lead, 4H also seems a pretty poor contract.

Agreed. But it's better than NT. And partner's raise is pretty aggressive. As it turns out, spades are 3-3, so the trump lead doesn't do much for them.

Edit: Maybe it is clearer if I say the following two things. 1) I disagree with 3 on the hand. 2NT is the clear bid. 2) Hearts is a better strain than NT or spades, whether you are at part-score or game.

How about a tactical underbid of 1NT on the first round? You have 11 HCP but only two controls, your clubs are iffy and the J is poor unless partner bids hearts--and if does, he's likely short in a minor, so either clubs are a weakness or diamonds won't run. Your Q is fine but the stiff spade is horrible in a NT contract--partner will be overvaluing his spade length. Change J and K into A and x and 2 is clearly right.
