Scoring: IMP

In a team game, you (south) open 1 and LHO bids 4. Partner bids 4, and you (perhaps unfortunately) decide to take a shot at slam by cuebidding 5. Partner wisely signs off in 5 and everyone passes.

The lead is the K, with RHO following small. Plan the play.

Lots of options but I think I'll win the Ace of hearts and lead the Ace of spades followed by the J. If LHO happens to win this I'll have to rely on a well-placed diamond King; however, if RHO wins I should be in control even against a 5/0 spade break as long as hearts are 7/1.

The only reasonable alternative seems to cash the AK of spades. Assuming that hearts split 7-1 we see that:

Winston's line wins when LHO has Kxx of spades and the diamond king, cashing AK wins when LHO has Qx of spades and RHO has the diamond king. I think that the latter is more likely so I'd cash the AK. However, Winston's line is definitely more spectacular.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

:) Looks like a cinch given 7-1 hearts. Pull trumps, unblock clubs and finesse diamonds twice if necessary. If the hearts are 6-2, my plan is to excuse myself from this table and go find an easier game.

A followed by A and 9, we need to keep control over the suit and the only possibility is a trump in dummy. The 8 is the highest, so no problems. This is the best line imo.

Ace of hearts
Ace of Spades see if 5/0 split
low to Ace of Diamonds
Finese a Spade if finese holds A clubs next and finese spade again

I cant see bidding 4 hearts with 7 cards KQ poss J xxxx and 3 spades is sensible so I see no point in playing for Qx dropping on AK spades

I also dont see K diamonds sitting favorably

the 4 hearts is to screw our game or slam, not to make I expect him to have KQ hearts only

but I could be very wrong

Well I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who would go down in this contract.

I played basically Hannie's line, starting with AK. When LHO showed out on the second round, I continued a third round of spades to RHO's queen. Now RHO played his second heart.... oops. After losing two hearts I still had an unavoidable diamond loser (K off).

Of course, the contract can be made in various ways.

At the other table 3NT was played (only 3 were bid) and made without difficulty.
